Dubai Watch Week Presents Its 2020 Virtual Horology Forum
Undeterred by the current situation, the organizers of Dubai Watch Week are taking their horological panel discussions online.
This month, Dubai Watch Week will be presenting the 6th edition of its Horology Forum under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. In light of the current health situation, there will, unfortunately, not be a physical show this year, but never fear, all the fun and excitement will be available on the organizer’s YouTube Channel.
The Horology Forum Concept
Dubai Watch Week was the first watch show to include a program of panel discussions, bringing together master craftsmen, captains of industry, and seasoned collectors to discuss a vast range of topics. This year’s panel discussions will include several not-to-be-missed, thought-provoking subjects for anyone interested in the world of luxury.
Panel Discussions
Each panel will be pre-recorded, but there will still be an opportunity to partake in a live Q&A session after each discussion, with the further possibility of submitting follow-up questions on social media in the days that follow. Also, new this year, each panel will be led by an individual from the Dubai Watch Week Committee who will be there to play “devil’s advocate” and spice up the debate.
Pump and Dumping – October 24th At 9 pm Dubai, UAE (GMT+4)
This first panel will discuss the subject of brands and retailers unofficially selling luxury watches on the gray market to recuperate investments. It will feature Adam Craniotes, Founder and President of RedBar Group; Jonathan Darracott, Head of Watches at Bonhams; Mishal Kanoo, Chairman of The Kanoo Group; and Shehab Gargash, Managing Director and Group CEO Gargash Group & Founder and Chairman of Daman Investments.
If you are interested in this topic, you can read Watchonista’s coverage on the gray market (HERE) or watch flippers on the secondary market (HERE).
Servants of Serpents – October 26th At 9 pm Dubai, UAE (GMT+4)
Conspiracy and authenticity will be the subject of this panel where guests will discuss whether the heart of the luxury industry beats in an organic market or is wound-up and coerced into ticking by specific entities. The speakers will include Ali Khadra, Founder and Publisher of Canvas and Sorbet magazines; Gary Getz, Resident Collector and contributor to Quill & Pad; Ian Skellern, Co-Founder and Technical Editor of Quill & Pad; and Marie-Cécile Cisamolo, Jewelry Specialist, Christie’s Geneva.
Means to the End of the World – October 28th At 9 pm Dubai, UAE (GMT+4)
This panel discussion will center around questions about the environment. For many, it is an uncomfortable topic, but one that cannot be ignored. Guests will include Aline Sylla-Walbaum, Global Managing Directory Luxury at Christie’s; Christophe Nicaise, Chief Strategy and Business Development Officer at Seddiqi Holding; Edouard Meylan, CEO of H. Moser & Cie.; and Stephen Forsey, Co-Founder of Greubel Forsey.
Rochambeau – November 9th at 9 pm Dubai, UAE (GMT+4)
This fun game of rock, paper, scissors will lead to the loser having to answer a particularly tricky question sent in from the audience. Expect some uncomfortable silences and artful skirting around the questions.
